Me: "You should probably go out and get some scotch for the storm."
My mother: "I already did... and vodka."

She then proceeded to tell me that she would've gotten some water had a woman not purposefully cut her off in the grocery store to get the last of the water. My mom asked her, "Are you going to take all of that?" and the woman replied, "Well, I don't have any water." She then strolled off with her cart.

This is good though because it led my mom to later find some classy foreign shite (Harrogate British Spa Water? and stuff from Halawa Aquifer).

Today in Digital Graphics, most of my time was free time (like most days in that class), so I decided to visit state government websites. Most of these sites have links that read something like, "Click here to chat live with a librarian!" (with questions, etc). I went to a couple different state's sites and talked to librarians. I asked "inappropriate" questions and questions to test their knowledge. It was fun. The Oregon librarian, John, wasn't very nice. I'm going to make this a daily thing: a couple of new states each day.

I went to the orthodontist a bit ago. They/he tightened both top and bottom braces. I am going to have a very hard time eating/existing.

"
We live in a black black world. We live in tents. We live in the black. We live in tents in the black. The tents are red and green. The tents were once black. The tents are no longer black. The tents are red and green. The tents are no longer black. The horizon is black. The horizon is black. The sky is black. The ground is black. The birds are black. The black is black is black is black is black is dark and makes is hard to see... the tents. My thoughts- are usually black. The tents were once black. The tents are now red and green. The tents were black. The sky is black. The tents could not be found in the black. The tents could not be seen. The tents are red and green. The tents can now be seen. The tents were black. The tents could not be seen. The villians could not find the tents. The man-eating natives could not find the tents. The knife-wielding death rockers could not find the tents. The foreign documentary film-makers could not find the tents. We were a simple, happy, contented people. We drank our wine. We smoked our fish. We made a few dollars manufacturing gimmicks to please the tourists. We made small withdrawls at the all night teller. We felt great, we smiled, but all that is gone. The tents were once black. The tents were black. The tents were hard to find. It was a challenge to find the tents. It was a challenge we enjoyed. It was not a particularly dangerous challenge. It was not sexually oriented. It was not socially unacceptable. It was a casual challenge. It was a safe challenge. It was a challenge we enjoyed. The tents were black. The tents were black. The sky is black. The tents could not be seen. The tents can now be seen. The tents are red and green. We are saddened by this change, we are saddened beyond words. We shiver in frustration by our overturn of fortune. We form study groups to root out the cause of this change. We drown our sorrow in lust and drugs. Our faces become creased by the lines of our fear. We cry. Everything. Is. Black. Everything is black. The floor is black. The floor is difficult to see. The floor is black the sky is black. The ground is black. The ground is hard to see. The tents are red and green. The tents are not permanent. Nothing is permanent. Nothing is new.
"

edit i:

caller i.d., 6:28 pm: "mar corps recrui"

edit ii:

Free Spirit is on her last leg.
From 'lissiehoya': If you have more than 50 interests, take every 7th interest and briefly explain it.
Most of my listed interests are arbitrary... it should be fun anyway.

Bangers vs Fuckers: Coachwhips album. Really fun album.

Chestertonian: de G.K. Chesterton's ideas! Witty Catholic writer/apologist. Gave me a new perspective on Christianity: instead of thinking it weak, I now think it something like "romantic". (It was also good to hear from a Christian not afraid to speak down on the rich and capitalism.)

Digital graphics: I love working with Illustrator and Photoshop. I'm in a digi. graphics class this semester, I'm enjoying it.

Electronic music: A good portion of the music I listen to is 'electronic' and I don't mean 'electric guitar' music when I say 'electronic music'.

G. K. Chesterton: Explained above. I could have just picked the eighth interest after the last but I want to follow the rules.

Ireland: I'm Irish-American and that is probably the root of my great interest in Ireland. It's a beautiful country from what I see of photos. I'll visit eventually. I have some second cousins living there now.

Marian devotion: I think 'Marian Devotion' is a really interesting thing. Devotion to Mary (mother of Christian God) is what it is if you couldn't guess... most Protestants consider it wrong, probably mostly due to misunderstanding. They think Catholics (probably other orthodox Christians) treat her like a Goddess, wouldn't it be interesting if Mary was considered a Goddess by Christianity!

Orange tea: The only 'orange tea' I've had is Orange Pekoe tea. Very good. I once put orange peel in my cup of orange pekoe tea... a nice effect.

Roman Catholic: Okay... I think this little exercise is making a believer out of me. A lot of my 'every seventh interests' are Catholic. Seventh! I do have a weird proportion of Catholic interests, but still...

Signifiers everywhere: ...and signifiers everywhere is the next. Signs! Ah, anyway, this is one of my useless interests (obviously not anymore), I don't remember when or why I added this.

Tobacco: I like tobacco. I smoke tobacco sometimes.

That's it.

"Where the gods write what they write

'The God of revealed religions--and by this I mean religions like yours, Taker religions--is a profoundly inarticulate God. No matter how many times he tries, he can't make himself clearly or completely understood. He speaks for centuries to the Jews but fails to make himself understood. At last he sends his only-begotten son, and his son can't seem to do any better. Jesus might have sat himself down with a scribe and dictated the answers to every conceivable theological question in absolutely unequivocal terms, but he chose not to, leaving subsequent generations to settle what Jesus had in mind with pogroms, purges, persecutions, wars, the burning stake, and the rack. Having failed through Jesus, God next tried to make himself understood through Muhammad, with limited success, as always. After a thousand years of silence he tried again with Joseph Smith, with no better results. Averaging it out, all God has been able to tell us for sure is that we should do unto others as we'd have them do unto us. What's that--a dozen words? Not much to show for five thousands years of work, and we probably could have figured out that much for ourselves anyway. To be honest, I'd be embarrassed to be associated with a god as incompetent as that."
     "Your gods have done better?"
"Good heavens, yes, Jared. Immeasurably better--infinitely better! Just look out there!" She waved her hand at the world in front of us. "What do you see?"
     "I see the universe."
"That's it, Jared. That's where the real gods of the universe write what they write. Your God writes in words. The gods I'm talking about write in galaxies and star systems and planets and oceans and forests and whales and birds and gnats." "

Last year in Mr. Clark's class we read a Rousseau essay concerning education; earlier today I read part of a Daniel Quinn speech concerning education; Quinn and Rousseau have very similar views on the subject. Why am I posting about this? Because I overwhelmingly agree with the two of them (and I bet you do too)!, and it's something to think about (and when's a better time to post this than when school is gearing up).

Quinn: "What sells most people on the idea of school is the fact that the unschooled child learns what it wants to learn when it wants to learn it. This is intolerable to them, because they're convinced that children don't want to learn anything at all--and they point to school children to prove it. What they fail to recognize is that the learning curve of preschool children swoops upward like a mountain--but quickly levels off when they enter school. By the third or fourth grade it's completely flat for most kids. Learning, such as it is, has become a boring, painful experience they'd love to be able to avoid if they could."

I read more of The Story of B today for the first time in awhile so I'm in a bit of a 'saving the world' mood. And I guess I'm saving the world by making a livejournal post. If anyone reading this wants to borrow Ishmael, comment.

The animal that's always been missing from the zoo finally gets its place!

I need to explain an awkward situation. Here goes: I was at dinner on Friday night with long long time friend X. We ordered. We were sitting, talking. This is a small restaurant. Three people walk in. They are ex-friend(Y) of X and I of long time ago and his family. They are seated right next to us. I acknowledge Y with a bit of a nod, it was all I could really muster. He returns the nod-ish. His parents say nothing but I'm sure they've seen who we (X and I) are. Our food comes. I've lost my appetite. X and I have to talk in very low voices. It was surreal. It was what should have been a hypothetical situation that X and I could've come up as a "what's the strangest thing that could happen to us right now". Maybe not that extreme. Close though. I don't know, maybe I'm way off and exaggerating. When we left the restaurant and made it outside with a closed door behind us we started laughing heavily and didn't stop for some time.

Anyway. This morning to noon was ad-selling for newspaper. My group didn't sell any space but we (I) did disrupt a yoga session; they asked me if I was there for the class. I panicked and didn't want to give them my usual ("Hi, I'm with the Klein High newspaper...") so I mumbled them sorry and that I was in the wrong "building".

After the bearchat group disbanded I hit up a couple other stores. No sales.

I'm pretty exhausted and in need of a good read and nap.

Had to spend extra time at off-campus today. I'm so exhausted. I fell asleep in one of my classes today. I forget which.

There's nothing at all exciting in my life right now but I don't really mind. We're only five school days into the semester. It feels like months. For the first time in a long time, I feel like a cigarette.

I have to read The Iliad for latin. I decided to challenge myself, I'm reading a long poetic version hailed by Oxford dons and the New York Times Book Review. I'm enjoying it. More later.

I woke up this morning with the idea that it was winter. It was quite chilly in my room and my windows were dewy. And I was really liking the fact that it was winter. Really. I'm still pretending that it is. It's still chilly and my windows are still wet.

I intended to start my Iraq article for newspaper late last night. I decided to watch Seinfeld episodes instead. Yesterday was mostly a dead-beat day.

When I woke up at eight this morning I intended to get right to the article but I started reading all the fresh lj community entries on my "friends" page (what a handy tool that is). It's ten now and I need to think of a lead.

edit i: 1:10 pm:
I just went on a bike ride. I can no longer pretend that it's winter. I think I'm finished or nearly finished with my article. It's kind of bare and short but I hope it'll work. I'm afraid I'm in a semi-exhausted, quasi-totally content state that prohibits me from writing anything but a bare, short article.

edit ii: 2:44 pm:
Quote of the day, "What we are looking at is not the boyhood of free thought; it is the old age and ultimate dissolution of free thought. It is vain for bishops and pious bigwigs to discuss what dreadful things will happen if wild scepticism runs its course. It has run its course. It is vain for eloquent atheists to talk of the great truths that will be revealed if once we see free thought begin. We have seen it end. It has no more questions to ask; it has questioned itself. You cannot call up any wilder vision than a city in which men ask themselves if they have any selves. You cannot facny a more sceptical world than that in which men doubt if there is a world."
-G. K. Chesterton

Today was strange and interesting and awful and it had its moments.

First period is Economics with Hutchins. I don't know. Should be weird. I have a couple acquaintances in there.

Second period is Business Multi-Media, we're gonna photoshop from what I can tell. I don't know anyone but the girl next to me seems nice.

Third period is english and I really have zero friendly acquaintances in that class, though there is a kid in there that I talked to later in the day in digital graphics about Lolita (not entirely sure how it came up but I overheard him talking to Allison, I was interviewing someone named Chris about why he was hit in the face with a bellbar (I don't even know) ), I'll have to sit next to him tomorrow.

Fourth period is journalism. I was expecting a normal-ish lecture, notes, test type class but it's newspaper, as in the Bearchat staff, it should be fun I think.

Fifth period I like: Latin four. Molly's there, other good people are there, plus I like the subject and the teacher to begin with.

Sixth is digital graphics. Today we were with the Drawing II class because one guy teaches both classes, we use the computers in the back of the art room. This is good and bad because Allison's in the Drawing II class, as is Lolita kid, and I doubt I'll see much of them.

I'm sure that was run-on-ish or something but I'm hella exhausted. Lazy, laid-back summer days have ended and now it's awkward situations and deadlines and I'm totally thrown off. Speaking of awkward situations. I think I've come to enjoy them but that's not to say that they're enjoyable situations. It's simultaneous. It's a weird enjoyable.

I get a second one for this, Terri Schiavo: incident was not nearly as outrageous as Sun Hudson (key difference being Sun Hudson was black and was taken off of support due to a George Bush law)

14) I like: orange pekoe tea.

15) When I turn my head left, I see: a bookshelf.

16) When I turn my head right, I see: a jazz festival poster, a couch, a bookshelf.

17) You know I'm lying when: I tell you I am.

18) In grade school: I ate some ants.

19) If I was a character written by Shakespeare, I'd be: the lead character's friend that gets stabbed accidentally.

20) By this time next year: I'll be moving into a dorm, hopefully.

21) A better name for me would be: Thomas? James?

22) I have a hard time understanding: inconsiderate people.

23) If I ever go back to school I'll: ...just kidding, I'm in school still.

24) You know I like you if: I don't avoid you... or if I do avoid you.

25) If I won an award, the first person I'd thank would be: whoever helped me win the award.

26) I hope that: this school year is quick and painless.

27) Take my advice: and try black orange pekoe tea, I'm drinkin' some now and it's a solid daily choice for tea.

28) My ideal breakfast is: pancakes.

29) A song I love, but do not have is: a song I'd like to get.

30) If you visit my hometown, I suggest: you not stay for long, you might get bored.

31) Tulips, character flaws, microchips, & track stars: are all nice from time to time.

32) Why won't anyone: rewild?

33) If you spend the night at my house: you can join the late night chess club. (I know that's the second time I've mentioned chess but it's really not a big part of my life at all)

34) I'd stop my wedding for: my true love!

35) The world could do without: a lot.

36) I'd rather lick the belly of a cockroach than: lick the belly of a cockroach forever.

37) My favorite blonde is: ...

38) Paper clips are more useful than: chip clips.

40) And by the way: my stomach just grumbled.

41) The last time I was drunk, I: played the generic blues baseline for what I imagine was a really long time.

42) My grandmother always: drinks Manhattans.

So. I'm in the 55th percentile. I'm gonna have to work hard this semester in my difficult classes to make it into top half at least. It shouldn't be too difficult since in the 55th percent I'm around a bunch of non-competitives; moving up 55 places will put me in the 48th.

from Click Opera:
"In your daydream of "the beautiful life" you're living with a beautiful woman in an ultramodern city where cars are a thing of the past. ... The thing about your city, though, is that it's full of lakes and forests and can barely be distinguished from the countryside."
... There's no longer any metonymic representation: parts do not stand for wholes. The "designated particular" no longer asserts its universality. There is no God, so everything is sacred. Nature and culture are no longer opposites, and neither are communism and capitalism."

edit i: 11:37 PM

I just dropped my cellphone into the toilet I was urinating in. I was "going" and all was well and then my phone began to vibrate, so I got it out of my pocket and as I was flipping it open it slipped out of my hand- right into the toilet. It now reads 'no service'.

edit ii: 11:49 PM

Now it's off and won't turn on at all.
